Here at Vertical Blinds Direct, we think measuring for your new blind should be as easy as 1,2,3. This is why we have created a simple guide for you to follow.
To help you with your measurements you will need a metal tape measure.
All your measurements need to be in centimetres and also to the nearest 0.1cm.
Our fabric experts recommend when ordering a blackout blind, that you fit this outside the window recess using the exact blind measurements. This ensures it blocks out as much external light as possible. Just follow the measuring guide below, and we will take it from there!
Recess Measurement
Select this option when you would like your blind to fit within the window recess.
Recess Width
Take 3 measurements for the width of the window recess as shown in the picture.
Take the smallest of these measurements. This is your recess width.
We will make the necessary deductions for the mechanisms, brackets and clearance to ensure the blind operates within the window recess.
Note: The actual fabric will be approximately 1.5cm narrower than the recess width depending on the blind ordered.
Recess Drop
Take 3 measurements for the drop of the window recess as shown in the picture.
Take the smallest of these measurements. This is your recess drop.
Note: The headrail is included in the drop of the blind therefore the louvres will be shorter than the drop.
Exact Blind Measurement
Select this option when you would like your blind to fit outside the window recess.
Exact Blind Width (also known as pin width or finished blind width)
Decide how much you wish to overlap the recess at each side. We recommend at least 7.5cm each side to minimise as much external light as possible.
Take the overall width measurement including the overlap. This is the Exact Blind Width.
Exact Blind Drop
Decide how much you wish to overlap the recess at the top & bottom. We recommend at least 7.5cm at the top, if the blind is required to roll up fully above the window recess.
Take the overall drop measurement including the overlap. This is your Exact Blind Drop.
Note: The headrail is included in the drop of the blind therefore the louvres will be shorter than the drop.
Louvre's Only
When selecting Louvres Only, no deductions will be made. Used only for the replacement of louvres when you have the headrail and fixings already. Measure the louvres exact, from the top of the material to the bottom. The number of louvres you would require is the amount you currently have hanging.
Note: All of our louvres are 89mm (3.5”) in width.
Measuring for 2 blinds in 1 window
When 2 vertical blinds are to be hung in one window recess, we would recommend taking the measurement of the recess as normal.
Then if it is an even split, halve the measurement and deduct 1cm from each.
As Exact Blind Size is being used, when measuring the drop, take the recess measurement as above and deduct 1cm for clearance.
